BIOGRAPHY OF DEMETRIUS J. ATSALIS

REPRESENTATIVE DEMETRIUS J. ATSALIS (D) of the Second Barnstable District was first elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1998. In 1967, Representative Atsalis' father, John Atsalis, campaigned for a House seat and was the Democratic nominee. Although John Atsalis lost to future Sheriff and friend, Jerry Bowes, there would eventually be a "Representative Atsalis" in the family with Demetrius' victory in 1998.

Representative Atsalis' Second Barnstable District is comprised of precincts in the towns of Barnstable and Yarmouth, Massachusetts on Cape Cod.

Representative Atsalis' legislative agenda is to reform the education funding formula to create a more equitable distribution of funding for his District, to promote economic development, to create jobs, to protect health care and prescription medication programs for seniors, to ease traffic congestion, to increase public safety, and to protect the Cape's pristine and fragile environment.

Representative Atsalis is the current Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Election Laws, and sits on two other Committees, the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development and the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies.

As a graduate of Barnstable High School, Class of 1982, Representative Atsalis earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Northeastern University in 1988, and obtained his Social Studies Certification from Salem State College in 1993. Prior to his election, he was employed in the Financial Services Field with Prudential Insurance. Representative Atsalis also worked for the Barnstable School System as a "Prevention Specialist" in charge of discipline and behavior at the Hyannis West Elementary School. Representative Atsalis has also served as a member of the Hyannis Waterfront Action Group in 1996 and the Executive Committee of the Hyannis Civic Association since 1998.

The Representative resides in Hyannis with his wife Monika and their three children: Karolina, Rebecka, and Lukas.
Representative Atsalis is also active with several youth sports associations in the Hyannis area.
