EXIT 6 1/2 STUDY COMMITTEE
Lt. Governor Kerry Healey is scheduled to appear at the Barnstable airport on February 17th to announce plans to fund a new study on the feasibility of constructing a new exit ramp on Route 6 between exits 6 and 7.
Representative Demetrius J. Atsalis (D-Hyannis), who has worked closely with the Exit 61/2 Study Committee, said that “There are many benefits to bringing this project to fruition.” He further stated that if built, “It would ease congestion on these roads as well as serve as a boom to business in Independence Park, which would benefit from easy access to and from the highway.”
Currently, motor vehicle traffic clogs Route 132 in Hyannis and Route 6 in Barnstable Village and Yarmouthport. Route 132 is a busy road in the off-season, and in the summer months becomes even more congested. Traffic exiting off Route 6 onto Route 132 is often backed up, creating a three-mile traffic jam for both residents and visitors to the Hyannis area. Oftentimes, heavy trucks will use residential roads to bypass traffic backups as shortcuts to the commercial areas on Routes 132 and 28, leaving many residents in these areas concerned with the safety of having these vehicles traveling through their communities.
“I have met with Mass Highway several times about Exit 6 ½ and hopefully we can get this project moving and the design plans before the citizens of the District to get their input”, Atsalis said. “This is a great project whose time has come.”
Lieutenant Governor Healey is expected to
announce plans to fund the new Exit 61/2 study in conjunction
with the Cape and Islands Regional Competitiveness Council. “I
am very happy to work with Representative Jeffrey Perry and
the Romney Administration in a bipartisan manner to facilitate
the funds needed to conduct a study on Exit 6 1/2. A new ramp,
which will hopefully be built in the near future, will make
travel through Cape Cod not only easier for our year-round
residents but also the visitors from other parts of the
Commonwealth and beyond. This project has been a priority of
mine, and it is finally good to see a light coming from the
end of the tunnel”, explained Rep. Atsalis.
