REPRESENTATIVE DEMETRIUS J. ATSALIS ANNOUNCES The
winner OF HIS 2006 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP essay
contest BOSTON, MA –
Representative Demetrius J. Atsalis announced today that his
charity, the Representative Demetrius J. Atsalis Charitable
Foundation, Inc., has selected Marcy Clark as the 2006
recipient of his annual scholarship essay contest. The contest
winner received a $1,000 scholarship to help pay normal
college expenses, such as tuition, room and board, and book
purchases. Ms.
Clark has chosen to attend
Emmanuel College in Boston and is planning on majoring in
Business Management. Each year the
scholarship is presented to a graduating member of the Senior
Class from Barnstable High School who also attended the
Hyannis East Elementary School or the Hyannis West Elementary
School and meets all eligibility requirements set forth by the
Charitable Foundation. A major
portion of the funding for the scholarship is raised from
Representative Atsalis’ Annual Golf Outing. This year the
outing took place on August 7th at the New Seabury
Golf Course.
Enough money was raised to fund the scholarship program
thanks to the generosity and good will of the players and
business sponsors that participated. “I am
proud that we were able to raise so much money for such a
worthwhile cause,” Atsalis stated. “Marcy is a wonderful
person and a deserving student and I know she will put this
scholarship money to good use. She is a determined young woman
and I wish her luck in achieving her educational goals,” Rep
Atsalis went on to say. The
purpose of the Essay Contest is to invite high school students
from the Town of Barnstable to write about a civic issue that has
affected the lives of people on the local, state or national
level. It is the Representative’s hope that the topic selected
for the Essay Contest will give students a chance to put to
use the knowledge they have learned from the Massachusetts
History and Social Science Curriculum Framework. The Essay
Contest is designed to promote the student’s interest in
history, as well as encouraging the student to explore the
idea of public service to their community.
